What Is Wifi, What Are Wifi Hotspots And
Where Can I Find Them?
Wifi
stands for "Wireless Fidelity" and is basically a wireless network which is
broadcast in a local area so that people can access the internet wirelessly within that
area.
Wifi hotspots are areas where the public
can access the internet wirelessly in places such as hotels, airports and other public
places. This is a great innovation as this means if you have a laptop with a wifi network
card installed you can travel anywhere in the world with it and use any of the wifi
hotspots that are in place at cafes, hotels, bars, restaurants, railway stations etc in the
local area that you are staying in to access the internet. The only other thing you need
to be able to do this is an account with a wifi service provider such as Boingo, BT
Openzone, Skype, O2, Nintendo or The Cloud Wifi service providers in order to access the
internet through the wifi hotspots The only drawback is that some wifi service providers
charge quite a bit for access, usually around £4.50 to £6 an hour although if you are
more regular user of wifi access and wifi hotspots then you can get unlimited access usage
from wifi access service providers such as Boingo
who charge $21.95 per month flat fee for that unlimited access which works out a lot
cheaper heavy users. It is also worth noting that not all wifi hotspots have the ability
to connect to all the wifi service provider's networks so you might want to have more than
one wifi provider account set up for your wifi access so that you can access the widest
range of wifi hotspots on your travels.
If you would like to find out where you
can find wifi hotspots all around the UK then a great place to do this for free is to go
to BCentral Wifi Hotspots UK Directory where you can type in the postcode
or address of where you are going and find out where all the wifi hotspots are in that
area as well as current access prices for each wifi service provider's access.
Wifi can also be used in peoples homes
so that they can access the internet anywhere in their house or garden. This is achieved
by using a broadband router to send the wifi broadband signal around your house which can
then be picked up by a Lan (which stands for local area network) network card installed in
your laptop or second desktop computer. Wifi can also be used in office workplaces so that
employees can move around within their work environment and still access the internet via
their laptops.
